REVISTING AN OLD FRIEND..

In several past posts I have mentioned the benefits of keeping a journal. If you are not a regular follower of this blog in addition to me telling you that you should be, let me recap for you quickly some of the benefits. One, it is the cheapest and easiest therapist you can employ. Even the fanciest journals generally cost lest than one visit to a professional therapist. Two, there can provide clarity when our thoughts are going in a million different directions all at once. They also can help you focus on and see the challenges you are facing, and in going back and rereading, if you so desire, can give you examples of past challenges you have overcome. They also can highlight things you have to be grateful for. it can also be a great place to hold a conversation you may not trust to anyone else. It is the perfect ‘old friend’ it doesn’t judge. it is completely unbiased and will listen as long as you care to talk/type/write.

The reason I bring this up today is the past three days we have looked at sources of inspiration and motivation that we can have delivered to us daily. Well in addition to keeping us focused, moving us towards our goals and keeping our spirits up these daily bits of information can be used to help formulate our thoughts for a journal entry. What did the daily inspiration remind you of? How did it influence your day? What do you think about the thought and opinion expressed in general. if you are using the day by day calendar, you can even tape or glue the page right in your journal. Once we start thinking and writing amazing things can happen. If you are not already keeping a journal I strongly encourage you to start now!

A NEW USE FOR AN OLD FRIEND…

Anyone who reads this blog or knows me personally knows that I am a big fan of keeping a journal.  There are several reasons why.  It is a great way to vent.  It may be an easier way for someone who has trouble expressing their feelings.  It is a great way to gain a little clarity when things seem overwhelming and confusing.  All of these are true, but a friend of mine recently gave me a great idea of a new benefit you can gain from writing down your thoughts and feelings. WRITE IT DOWN…

There are often two great challenges in forming a more positive attitude and lifestyle.  First, knowing what to change, much less how to change it.  Second, keeping motivated in a negative world.  A tool that goes a long way in addressing both of these concerns is a journal.  If you kept a diary when you were younger you are familiar with the concept.  A quick jot of your emotions on paper helps in so many ways. Not a fan of pen and paper? There are plenty of journaling software available. This idea was made popular by the TV show ‘sex in the city’.  writing, or typing, your thoughts down helps in several ways. One, it helps with achieving clarity.  Often when confused about what the right thing may be to do in a certain situation I journal about it. The answer doesn’t always jump out at me, but I usually leave knowing a little bit better where I stand. Two, it also helps see where negativity may be creeping in and what subjects you may not have the most pleasant outlook on.  Being that your journal is only intended to be read by you, feel free to be completely honest and you may discover what is holding you back from living life in a more positively passionate way, and how best to move forward.  Third, if you are a fan of going back and reading what you have written days, weeks, months or even years earlier it can be a great way to see how far you have come.  I must confess this is not a practice I often do, but when I do it seems comical to see what I may have considered an impossible problem 6 months ago that I may have forgotten about already.  It also helps me see how much more positive I have become or warns me that I may not be as positive as I should be.  Trust me when I tell you a journal can be the kindest and cheapest therapist you will ever Love.

A MAN AND HIS WORLD…

I would like to share a story with you that illustrates the importance of personal happiness.  This story comes from the course “Lead the Field” a great business management course I highly recommend.

One day, a man was watching a professional football game on television.  His five-year-old son kept bothering him.  So the man tore out a page of the Sunday paper.  It was a full-page airline ad that showed a picture of the world- the planet earth as seen from space.  He tore up the page into a dozen pieces and gave them to his son.  He said to him, “Here put this picture together and show daddy how smart you are”.  He then went back to watching his football game.

In a surprisingly short time, the youngster had taped the picture back together.  It wasn’t very neat, but it was a very good job, indeed, for one so young.  “Hey, that’s amazing!” the father said. “how did you put that world together so quickly?”

The little boy said “There was a picture of a man on the other side. I just put the man together and then the world was all together”

The youngster was no doubt surprised by the big, warm hug he got.  “that’s right, son.” said the father “When the man is all together, this world is all together too”
