After a season of gift giving, let us not forget about the person in the mirror. One of the greatest gifts we can give ourselves is to take charge of our own happiness. Too many times we hear people say things like this – “I was having a great day until —-” or “How can I be happy when traffic is bad, my boss is a jerk and the bills keep growing?”
My response to any of this is to ask if you know of anyone who has faced any of these circumstances, often worse ones, and managed to keep a positivedisposition? My second book, Living the Dream, has a collection of stories of people who faced much worse than you and I probably will and are some of the most positive people I know.
The Secret they use, and we can too, is to not let our circumstances dictate our happiness. Be determined not to let others, or even life in general, tell you how to feel. Do not give anyone, or anything, that much control over your life! Make happiness an inside job.
Well, isn’t this a confusing title? I should certainly say so. Let us start with how you are, indeed, your past.Any of us who study the Law of Attraction know that a certain energy will attract to itself. This is one reason that it seems the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, as the saying goes. If you have only been exposed to poverty growing up, that is all you know. Your thoughts and actions leading up to this point have you in a state of poverty. Same holds true if you grew up rich. That is what you know. You take actions that will allow you and your money to remain lifelong friends. If you wake up and find that putting on that pair of jeans you bought last year seems like a bit more of a struggle, it is not because of the one doughnut you had for breakfast. No, it is years of eating poorly. You are, in fact, the result of the decisions you have made up to that point. In this way, you are your past. There is good news to be had, however.
You are also not your past. What? Let me explain. I hear a lot of people refer to themselves as something. It can be something positive, or something negative. “I am a procrastinator.” they say. “I am not a morning person.” is another great example. “No, that is what you have been.” What you are today can change in an instant. You can begin working towards creating a new you. Just as we discussed above how your present self is the result of the decisions you have made in the past, your future self will be the result of the decisions you make going forward.
Many people also choose to let past trauma define who they are. “I am a child of alcoholic parents.” or “I was in an abusive relationship.” Look, things may knock you down in life. Scratch that. Things will knock you down in life. That is not and will not be your fault. If, however, we come back years later and you are still on the ground, that is your fault. That is not to say that these things are not painful and do not leave emotional scars. They do and many of them may take years to recover from. We do not have to let them define us. It may take therapy. It will take confronting these issues and the fears and trauma they have created inside of us, but we do not have to be our past.
The same is true of others. In the past, people may have done us wrong. They may have not been people we would have liked to associate with. If that is not who they are today, and we are judging them, then we are convicting an innocent person. That is not to say you should be gullible and believe someone has changed just because they told you. We should not hold them prisoner for their past actions. Just as we can change, so can others. If you knew me a long time ago, you may think, “This guy is not someone I would want to be around.” You would have been right. Now, I can’t count how many people compliment the way I treat Margie. Many ask me to talk to their man and try to show them how to talk and act.
This change all came from the fact that I chose to no longer be my past. It didn’t hurt that I meant a lovely and spirited woman who held me accountable for my behavior. You can do the same. You are the result of the decisions and actions you have made up to this point. So, you are your past. You are not a prisoner of that past, however. Starting the very second you finish reading this blog, you can choose to no longer let your past define you. Changes occur in an instant. Commitment and follow through is what changes identity going forward.
In my second book, Living the Dream, there are several stories of people who prove that you do not have to be defined by your past. There is a woman who was abused as a child. She is now part of a group that helps abused children. There is a man who saw his family get killed. He moved to a different country and started a family. A gentleman who grew up in rural West Virginia, uneducated and with little prospects. He went on to become an accomplished musician and live the life of his dreams. Do they still have parts of their past that haunt them? I am sure they do. We all do. What is true about all of them is they did not let those circumstances define them. Their future was not dictated by their past.

With a website called Secret2anamazinglife, I am asked countless times, “What is the secret to an amazing life?” It is not really one secret. In fact, none of this is secret. A little effort will open up to you a world that contains magic we were previously unaware of. I know this is hard to explain waiting at a red light, in line at a coffee shop and, believe it or not, once while attending to some business in a men’s room. In the world we live in, people want a quick answer. Some ‘magic pill’ that will turn their life around. We have good news and bad news on that subject.
First the bad news. In the big pharma based world we live in, there is no life-transforming pill. At best, there will be one that chemically alters you to be in an emotional state to better approach, or care less, about your problems. Drugs, alcohol and even food can be used to mask and compensate for the pain of life. Very inspiring so far, isn’t it? I told you there was good news. There is one thing that can radically transform your life, and do so quickly. How do I know? It worked in mine. That one thing is gratitude.
I know. I know. You have heard it a million times. Being grateful is the key to success. Oprah says it. Steve Jobs said it. Tony Robbins said it. How can just being thankful for everything you have it life, including the challenges, make such a difference? Look at the first photo in this post. Gratitude can affect many areas of our life. Here is what I am going to tell you about gratitude. Don’t believe me. Here is how I discovered the power of being grateful. I was challenged to do a gratitude journal for 30 days. I accepted the challenge with the intent I would show this person that it would not work for me. By the end of one week I felt something, but I didn’t know what it was. By the end of two weeks I was feeling happier and looking forward to life more, but it could have been a run of good luck. By the end of 30 days I was so happy that I was annoying myself.
What happened when I was in this divine state? I was in a terrible car accident. I went through the windshield and woke up in the hospital. It was as if the universe was either testing my resolve or showing me how powerful this gratitude thing could be. If you want to hear the whole story, I suggest reading my book, A Happy Life for Busy People. To say that being grateful helped me through one of the most trying times in my life would be an understatement.
Don’t take my word for it, or the science that gave us the facts above. Prove it to yourself. I am going to put forth the same challenge that was given to me. Keep a gratitude journal for 30 days. All this means is writing down at least 3 things you are grateful for everyday and why. You can do this in a spiral notebook. You do not have to tell a single soul you are doing it. Be prepared to be asked what changed in you though. By the end of 30 days, if done faithfully, you will know why I consider gratitude the ‘magic pill’ of life transformation. If you want to know more about the power of gratitude exercises, read my book, Living the Dream. I look forward to hearing from all of you who take up this challenge. We are all looking to use our money wisely these days. With the price of groceries and gas on the increase, every dollar counts. Yet, self-care is more important than ever. Stress seems to come at us from every corner. Turn on the television or look at your phone and there seems to be one stressful situation after another. We need to invest in ourselves and our mental well-being to thrive in today’s world. I am currently working on my fourth book, From Ruining Livers to Saving Souls, and learning a lot about both myself and life in general. As faithful readers of this blog, I am going to give you a bit of a preview. When I was growing up, I wanted to be a rock star. Really, who didn’t? My personification of what a cool leading man was Michael Hutchence from the band INXS. He seemed to have this sensual and yet mysterious aura about him. I managed to be in a few bands and have quite a bit of fun as you will be able to read in the upcoming book. Still, never quite a rock star.
Next up was being a bartender. The ringleader of the nightly circus. The star of the show. This I did for 23 years. I was pretty good, if I allow myself to say so. I flipped bottles. I learned the art of conversation to an insane degree. I mixed drinks. I was charming and friendly. I never realized the skill that made me a great bartender. It was the same skill that allowed me to excel working with the public during the day at the post office. I recall being on vacation in a different country and someone walking up to me saying, “You are the funny guy from the post office.” Crazy, but true.
During this time, I was also helping out at a meal program feeding under privileged individuals. I approached that with the same rock star/bartender personality that I had from my youth. I recall people switching lines to come to me at the meal program. They remembered something I had said to them the month prior. One gentleman told me, “You were the first person to call me ‘Sir’ in 5 years.” Before long, I had a little following at the meal program. It was good to see the smiles on the peoples faces. It was a lot like bartending, except for the fact I was serving beans and hot dogs instead of a rum and coke.
Fast forward to 2023. I went from being on the stage or behind the bar, to being behind the keyboard as both an author and a blog writer, and behind the microphone as a DJ and a host of the “Living the Dream with Neil Panosian” podcast. Highly recommend you check that out. When I was about to release my first book, a well-meaning customer explained to me that it would only sell about a dozen copies. The reason she gave for this prognostication, was that people don’t read anymore and that I didn’t have a major publisher behind me. That book has sold over 1000 copies and counting.
Why are we taking a brief trip through all of my occupations? I did skip hosting a radio and television show for a while. The former of which is the best job I have ever had. The reason why is that while writing about these and other life journeys I have had, I gained a most valuable truth. It is the secret for becoming a success in any endeavor you are engaged in. I unconsciously used the secret in every one of those professions I listed.
A lot of people say that when they become ‘rich and famous’ they will use that fame and fortune to help people. I have learned the best way to become a success at anything, and by doing so make a name for yourself, is to be of service. If you want to be important – be useful. As a bartender, I made sure to get to know my customers. What they drank. Their occupations, their family and anything else that would make them feel valuable. When I helped people at the post office, I would try to make the experience as fun as couldbe. My thinking was if I was stuck working there and they were stuck doing business there, why not make it the best and most entertaining 3 minutes of their day. As an author, my writing is dedicated to using my experiences in life and the lessons I learn, to benefit others. As a DJ, radio and television host, my goal is to have you walk away feeling better than when you arrived. In my podcast, we share many secrets to improve life and do it in a very entertaining way.
All of these examples are finding ways in which to serve the people I interact with. The more and better I was able to serve them, the more important and significant I became. Even at the meal program that I was fortune enough to help at, service was what set me apart. Everyone there was serving food and beverages, but I was the only one serving dignity and respect. These all became clear to me when I began to write about them for my upcoming book. If you wish to become someone of significance, become someone of service. People will always want to be around, and give their time, business and respect to someone who helps them or makes them feel good about themselves. If we all focused on the best way in which we can best serve each other, we will all be a success.
As the new year begins, we at Secret2anamazinglife.com, would like to wish all of you a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year! We are going to increase our dedication to you our wonderful readers and supporters.
In 2023, we promise you a post every single day. We know, to paraphrase Zig Ziglar , Motivation doesn’t last, neither does bathing. That’s why we recommend you have both daily. To that end, we are going to have a post every day to read. You never know when you might need a little boost and we are going to make sure you have it when you do!
We are also going to connect this blog with my personal podcast, Living the Dream with Neil Panosian. You will be able to take us with you in the car, as you go for a walk, in the gym or wherever else you listen to podcasts. We would also invite you to engage with us here more often. Your likes, shares and comments provide essential feedback that helps shape and mold us to serve you better.
On a personal note, my fourth book will also be released this year. That will be 3 books in 3 years. Exhausting? Yes. Fulfilling? I can’t even begin to tell you. We hope that everyone one of you have the best 2023 and we will be here to serve you and provide whatever assistance we can!
